Product Spotlight - bio-based additives (Estolide)

1. Biosynthetic® Technologies announced the launch of their new product line of novel additives for the metalworking fluids (MWF) market called Biocea™.

2. Biosynthetic Technologies has developed a revolutionary new class of high-performance bio-based additives for the use in metalworking fluids, called Biocea.

3. These novel sustainable additives use the patented estolide technology and are biobased, biodegradable, non-bioaccumulative, and non-toxic.

4. Biocea additives leverage Biosynthetic Technologies’ proprietary estolide technology for high demanding water soluble, synthetic, and conventional oil additive applications.

5. Biocea additives are produced with naturally derived oils that not only improve the quality of formulated metalworking fluids, they are also biobased and biodegradable allowing for the manufacture of environmentally acceptable metalworking fluids that are safe and non-irritating to the skin.

6. These estolide based additives enhance the lubricity, polarity, film strength, biostability, hydrolytic stability, and oxidative stability of the fluid, and are developed especially for real world metalworking fluid applications.

7. The unique structure of castor oil offers interesting properties, making it appropriate for various industrial applications.

8. Castor oil is valuable due to the high content of ricinoleic acid (RA), which is used in a variety of applications in the chemical industry.

9. These products are an excellent product line extension to our high-performance estolides and provide a sustainable alternative to the existing raw materials currently used in the metalworking fluids market.

10. Biosynthetic® Technologies manufactures a revolutionary new class of biobased synthetic compounds called estolides that are made from organic fatty acids found in various bio-derived oils.

11. These highly functional biosynthetic oils have numerous uses in lubricant, automotive, marine, pharma and personal care applications and can be used as the primary base oil of a formulation, a component of a base oil co-blend, or even as an additive.

12. In addition to their high-performance properties, these renewable oils are biodegradable and nontoxic.

ESTOLIDES
1. Estolides are a class of unique bio-based oils with a variety of uses.

2. Their oligomeric structure contains fatty acid repeat units, with secondary ester linkages on the alkyl backbone.

3. Relevant technical performance properties include increasing or decreasing viscosity and polarity, as well as improving cold temperature properties and oxidative stability.

4. These benefits include lubricity and load-carrying characteristics, strong oxidative stability, and good demulsibility.

5. In addition, they show high flash point, with closed-cup values ranging from 200°C to 245 °C (ASTM D93) and open-cup values ranging from 240°C to >260 °C (ASTM D92).

6. BT base oils display good cold temperature performance as well, with pour points ranging from -18 °C to -21 °C (ASTM D97).

7. These oils contain high bio-content, are biodegradable and non-toxic, and do not bioaccumulate. Base oil products are 70-90% biodegradable (OECD 301) with 65-95% bio-content (ASTM D6866). Additionally, they displayed no bioaccumulation (OECD 107) and were non-toxic at 1000 mg/mL (OECD 201, OECD 202, OECD 203, OECD 209).
